Preface
- author made bold statement substance use is compeletely & fully your choice.
- auhor saying that addiction and recovery are both social construct and but after reading this book you will have never see addiciton in different perspective.and finally any body can moderate.
- first reaction from people to the the idea of successfully moderating is fear & anger , and they believe that it all giving fall sense of security.
- addiction” does not actually exist as a state of loss of control or hopelessness but only as a state of belief in loss of control and hopelessness.
- Addiction is a set of beliefs held together by myths, mysticism, and misguided ideas, as well as misinterpreted and flawed research.
- recoverey society focus on fear and dominant power of substance
- The treatment centers are its churches, the recovery zealots are its missionaries, and the addicts and alcoholics are its unknowing followers. and they were who make substance a very supernatural or living breathing thing.
- it's not that substance is changed, but belief and theory.
The Freedom Model
- The Freedom Model is not a recovery program or treatment but a mindset that clarifies misconceptions about addiction and recovery. It empowers individuals to choose between heavy use, moderation, or abstinence based on facts and personal happiness, free from fear or societal myths.
Pursuit of Happiness is the Key
- people move on when they see happier option, this also applies to heavy substance use.
Abstinence or Your Life!” – the False Alternative
- recovery society will tell you that you should never touch substance , otherwise remain addiction hell.
- The choice between “abstinence or your life” is like a robber saying, “Your money or your life.” It’s not a real choice because it’s forced by fear. You make the decision out of panic, not because it makes you happy or is what you truly want.
- research shows that nobody loses control , even most extreme user can easily moderate.
- mugger is forcing one time decison while conselors trying to force lifelong decison. hence people miserable and deprived causing get back to old heavy use cycle.
Starting on the right foot
- People change quickly and happily when they see that a new way of living, like reducing or stopping substance use, is more satisfying than their old habits. This happens by focusing on what makes them truly happy and reassessing the benefits of different choices, including abstinence. Fear-based decisions, like choosing lifelong abstinence out of panic, get in the way of this process. The false belief that the only choices are abstinence or losing control stops people from thinking about what truly makes them happy and prevents real, lasting change.
- By coming face to face with the fact that you are capable of moderation now, you give yourself the best chance of quickly and happily changing.
Substance Use Is Risky
- loss of control” over substance usage is a myth, so that you can approach this from a place of achieving greater happiness and long-term success, rather than making a short-lived decision based on fear and panic
- freedom model based on truth. those 2 are :
- 1. Moderate use is possible for anyone, because loss of control is a myth.
- 2. Risk-free substance use is not possible for anyone.Every action in life carries some level of risk and cost.
Beliefs Are Powerful
- If you believe in addiction, recovery, or the idea that substances can control you, you should avoid using them completely. This is because those beliefs make it hard to trust your ability to moderate or stop. Free will is absolute—you either have it or you don’t. If you think substances can overpower you, it’s safer to abstain. However, even if you reject these beliefs, you might still choose abstinence, and that’s okay—as long as it’s a choice made for your happiness, not out of fear.
- Drugs don’t have an inherent power to make people addicted—addiction is a belief, not a fact. Research shows that over 90% of people with serious substance issues either quit or moderate their use on their own, without professional help. Like many others, you have the freedom to decide what’s best for your life.
- Understanding the facts and letting go of fear about substances allows you to choose your own path without guilt or shame. However, this doesn’t eliminate the risks of substance use, such as health issues, legal consequences, or social fallout.
